#1 Hottest Decorating & Fashion Trend for 2011

It is always fun when January rolls around to hear what the new trends for fashion & decoration will be.

Well, it was just reveled that the “HOT” color for this year will be:

R U S T

So if you are looking to redecorate your home, your wardrobe or even your choice for jewelry fashion be sure to keep this tidbit in mind.

Can’t afford to do a whole redesign of a room or wardrobe?  Let’s address some of these things.

~ Redecorating: Don’t think you have to completely redo a room to make it up to date in the fashion world.  Just adding a  throw blanket to a corner of a chair or couch and maybe toss a couple throw pillows with it.  Do some accent painting with stencils with the fashion color, but be careful that you don’t OVER DO IT with how much stenciling you do, less is more and depending on the style can be a very elegant look as well.  Add an end table in the new color of the year!  This will bring in that splash around the room and make some great conversation pieces!  On a very restricted budget, then shop at a thrift store or goodwill and look for accent pieces in the new color.  Maybe a vase or picture frame.   You also can ALWAYS take a piece of furniture and repaint or recushion the chair to include the lasted fashion trend!

~Wardrobe: We all know it took us years to build the collection of clothing that we have in our closets now.  So to say well, donate them all and start over is not only feasible, but VERY unrealistic in the economy we are in today.  Why not shop an up scale second-hand store and see if you can’t find and accent piece to give you that splash of color to liven your current wardrobe up?  Everything from a simple scarves that can be worn many different ways is a great start.  Not sure about how to get create all those great styles, look up different ways on the internet.  Want to do something a little more, how about a nice quality blazer or new coat? Even a new pair of shoes can change the whole look of the same outfit to a new exciting & fashionable style.

~Jewelry: Make this one count! With styles as they are now, many of the designers are creating jewelry that combines many different colors, so this mean you can buy ONE piece and it can go with lots of different outfits but look completely different with each.

So when you are feeling a little drab and looking for THE SPIRITS TO MOVE you into the new fashion trend, remember RUST!

Should I have Ice Hanging on My Roof?

All but one of the states have snow coverage somewhere to make this a record year.  With all the cold the country is experiencing, what about the ice on your roof?  Is this normal or should I be concerned is a question many of you maybe asking yourselves.

Ice dams usually develop from the incorrect ventilation of attic and roof areas.  The diagram below is a great example of how this happens.

To answer your question, NO, you should not have long icicles hanging from the roof.  They are not only a potential risk for people or animals  walking under them; they can cause severe damage to your home inside and out.   Here is an example of a severe ice dam on a home that will need professional expertise to remove this correctly:

So you have some of these same looking icicles on the side of your home?  What to do now?  There are companies you can call that will come out and look at your problem, give you an estimate to resolve this issue, give you advice on how to prevent future issues & can do the work for you.

Some of the resolutions that may be used to correct the issues could be:

~ Steaming the icicles:  Some professionals my recommend to steam the icicles off your roof.  This can take anywhere from 3+ hours to do and can be costly.

~ Roof Melt:  These can either be in a disk form that you toss onto your roof and will melt the snow/ice around where they land or a pellet formula that needs to be spread on by someone applying it onto the roof .  Again, I would recommend hiring a professional as the roof is going to be VERY slippery and could lead to injury if done by someone not professionally trained. (Photo for example only not a recommendation on behalf of author).

~ Heater Cores: Once you have the first issue resolved, a professional may recommend you install a heating system on your roof to resolve future issues.  This is typically electrical.  Cost, installation periods & availability vary based on roof dimensions, slopes, coverage and age.  There are different styles and cable that can be used based on your needs.

Most of us, when we see the icicles hanging from our roof would instinctively grab a broom or something with a long handle and knock them down.  However, this could do more damage to your roof and/or shingles.  Do NOT run the risk of having to hire a professional to correct more than what is wrong.  If this issue  is not handled correctly, the result could be melting that runs into your home, into your attic, into the sheet rock and may make it all the way into your basement.

THE SPIRITS TO MOVE  strive to give you quality information & resolutions to issues faced in real estate.

Look Around YOUR Home For Ideas

Some are still putting away the holiday decorations, some already have them down and all are left staring at the large spaces that 20 days ago glitzy and gleamed.  Now what?

Are you sitting in this space wondering what to put on that empty wall space? Maybe thinking about that chair that just doesn’t fit the rest of the room or looking at the kids art work piling up and not sure what to do with all of it?

Let’s take a look at what we can create and do to change some of these dull or unfitting pieces.

That large open spot on the wall:   Have you been given some great dishes with unique designs on them?  Why not create a wall design that uses these?  You can get wall hangers for plates and such at any hardware store or large box store.  Hang the hangers-on the wall in a unique arrangement that will display these great pieces and make for wonderful conversation pieces.  How about some unique jewelry that you aren’t using any longer but still remember all the compliments and “OH’s & AH’s” you got when you wore it.  Why not get a frame and use this as a picture on a wall or in a stand on a counter.  This way you can still get that wonderful “OH’s & AH’s” and display these great pieces rather than hide them away.

Curtain tie backs: Rather than using the same old tie backs that all of us buy at the local store, then walk into our neighbors and see the same thing and think, “I WISH I HAD SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE DID”.  Again, use your old jewelry to create a unique & custom tie back that will create a distinguished look you are hoping for.  Use long pearls wrapped or tied back. Have a large necklace these work great also and can create quit a sparkle in any room.

That chair that just doesn’t fit: You painted the room and now that great chair doesn’t fit any more.  What to do? Why not repolster it or if it is wood, paint it and put a new cushion on it.  These are cost saving ways to update a chair and make it work in the room.  You can find easy instructions to assist in these projects on the internet.

Oh, all the kids artwork!:  What wonderful pieces your child has created and given to you.  Know what?  You have a one of a kind original that no one; no matter how hard they try will be able to get a copy of (unless you pass it along or copy for them)?  Why not put these pieces in frames and display them on your wall, end tables or frame stands around the house?  Your guests will love to see their work, your kids will love telling everyone what they were thinking when they created it  and you can rotate these so your pictures and decor are always changing.

Be creative and let THE SPIRITS TO MOVE help you to create new focal points, discussion points and save you money while doing it.  We all have many unique things in our own homes that can be used for more than it’s intended purpose, open your mind and see what you can create.

Septic Systems and Freezing Weather are they friends?

Many people own homes that have septic systems with them.  However, if you do not properly take care of the system from the connection to the home all the way out to where the tank is located the cost can be astronomical not to mention the hassle it can cause in your family.

Did you know that lack of snow coverage can cause a problem? If there is not enough snow to cover the tank the frost can be driven deep into the ground and cause a freezing issue as well.  A path of any sort whether it be from human, snowmobile, ATV or even livestock moving across the tank or lines may also cause freezing issues.  So to protect yourself from having issues post signs indicating where the lines or tank or located at for all to stay clear of these areas.

Lack of plant cover could also cause a freezing issue for a septic system.  Most companies will recommend allowing vegetation cover to go un-cut after mid-September as it will add some insulation to the system.  The vegetation will also catch additional snow to help insulate the system.

Not a plumber? Higher a professional to come in once a year to check for leaks in the plumbing fixtures or condensation from a furnace or humidifier.  Slow moving water through the discharge line is enough to cause ice to build up and eventually plug the line.  If you find a leak, make sure it goes into a pail that is dumped often may help in avoiding a frozen septic.  You can also look into the use of heat tape or a small condensation pump may be helpful in some situations.

Irregular use of a septic system may cause freezing as well.  Insufficient temperatures may occur in homes where there is long periods of in use such as people who go south for the winters.  Some of this may be avoided with a little planning.  Schedule laundry to be done a load a day and use the warm/hot setting, use your dishwasher daily or even a hot bath can help.   Thinking of leaving the water run all the time? This will cause anther issue of hydraulically overloading the system.  If you own a cabin or hot water use is not an option, then a SSTS professional should be contacted to discuss the best remedy or options to keep your system from freezing.

Landscape of the pipes also plays a big part of keeping a freezing situation from happening.  If  your pipes do not have the correct slope, which can occur from settling, roots, new vegetation planting or maybe they have just sagged from time-lapse sewage can collect and freeze.  If your system has a pump line, the sewage needs to be able to drain from the drainfield back to the pump tank each time the pump turns off.  Be sure also to check for any broken or damaged inspection pipe caps and maintenance hole covers.

So this leads us to a couple commonly asked questions:

1.) What if my septic system freezes?

CALL ON ON-SITE PROFESSIONAL!! There are no if’s ands or but’s about this.  Do not add anything to the septic such as antifreeze, salt     or septic system additives.  You by law can not pump sewage onto the ground surface.  Do NOT start a fire over the system or run water to try to thaw the freeze.

2.) Can I prevent my system from freezing in the first place?

Yes, there are things that may possibly help.  Try to put extra 8-12 inches of mulch over the pipe lines & tank which will act as extra insulation.  There are many versions of mulch that can be used and any landscape company or professional company should be able to best indicate which type would work best for your personal situation.  BE SURE THIS IS DONE TO A NEW SYSTEM WITH  THAT DOES NOT HAVE ANY VEGETATION ON IT.

The best prevention you can do is to watch for signs that you may be or will soon have issues with your septic system.  Indicators may include, but limited to, seeping or ponding.  If you see anything, contact a professional immediately to discuss the issue & what remedy will work best in your situation.

Preparing to list

With the holidays about over, now comes the time to take down all the holiday cheer and put up the day-to-day decorations.  THE SPIRITS TO MOVE can get you through this project.

Are you thinking of listing your home soon?  If so, plan ahead to making your listing easy.

When you list your home, remember these helpful hints:

1.) LESS IS MORE  time to de-clutter your home if you are planning on listing.  Don’t forget to do the storage area, closets and even the garage.

2.) FAMILY PICTURES  even though we all love to show off our kids and families, now is not the time to do this.  Take down all personal photos especially those of your children.  You want your potential buyers to look at your home and all it has to offer not your family photos.

3.) THE APPLIANCES  when potential buyers come into your home they will be looking at all possibilities, including how much work with will have to do just to get through the door.  Take the time to clean the stove, inside of the microwave, and the shelves & drawers in the fridge.  What could take you little time, may also bring more dollars to your pocket.

4.) CABINETS  make them sparkle! Got a Tupperware one? Clean it out so that when the potential buyer opens the door, they don’t have a flood of Tupperware fall out at them.  Remove pieces that are not used and store them.  Make the cabinets look roomy & spacious.

5.) THE MAN CAVE  Yes men, you to have to do your part to help in getting your home sold.  Take some time to clean the garage. Put some of the kids toys away, take and remove the blower/mower if you don’t  need them at the time, box up some of those tools that you don’t use daily or will not need until you move.

6.) THE KIDS ROOMS/PLAYROOMS  We just saw the holidays go and do your realize with the economy as it is, do you realize that many children did not even get a toy this year?  How is your child stacking up on toys?  Do they have so many that you can’t close that closet door or are embarrassed at how they lay all over the home and you child doesn’t even play with them? Why not take this time to donate the toys that your child no longer plays with, has out grown or just doesn’t even realize they have it anymore.  Your home will show better and you will feel good in helping a child that would love to just have a new toy, even though it is used it will put a sparkle in their eyes!

So now that THE SPIRITS TO MOVE maybe making you think of moving, we hope these suggestions of a few things will help aid in your sale.

Holiday Traditions continued

Today, I got to once again with my mom do one of my favorite holiday traditions.  We take one day a year and spend it doing the last-minute holiday shopping for the special people left on our lists.  Along with those last-minute gifts that need to be bought, we have a long lunch, watch all the people scamper around looking for their perfect gifts and of course just enjoy the holiday cheer and decorations at the mall.

Since the Mall of American is one of the largest in the US, how can we say we couldn’t find just the perfect gift? Well sometimes that does happen, but mainly just because the person we are shopping for has everything they need, want or could think of.  The mall has brought in many new stores such as Ed Hardey, the MAC store and so much more.  There are also many of the old-time favorites such as Victoria Secrets, Sears, and Macy’s.  The holidays are such a wonderful time to give, but don’t forget the ones that have had to break family traditions due to financial & other stresses our recent economy has brought on many.

People have many different holiday traditions from which day is spent with which family, Christmas Eve or Christmas day.  What the meal will consist of; prime rib, ham, lasagna or some other cultural food.  How the family will open presents; youngest to oldest or oldest to youngest, all at one time or many very different ways.  Also, I have heard lately that some families take the time to serve a meal in the food kitchens, go to an elderly home and spend some time with an elder that doesn’t have anyone to come to see them on this very special day.

It amazes me when THE SPIRITS TO MOVE get in the souls of some people what they can actually do to brighten another persons holiday.  Isn’t that really what  this season is really about? How we as good people can help a person less fortunate than us? I do believe that this is what the holiday is about and that there are lots of good people in this world that look to make others smile as well.

With the holiday dancing closer minute by minute, take a moment to reflect on some of your own family traditions and maybe how some new ones could also be added to brighten someone elses holiday.

Would be, Won’t be…which are you?

Having the RIGHT agent does help.

Many people are still saying, I can’t afford to buy a home.  Is this you?  If so, you have not found the right person to work with, or your SPIRITS TO MOVE is not strong enough.

When you work with someone or a team of people that are intersted in seeing you achieve your goals, they will give you direction, suggestions and stay by your side until your goal is accompolished.  How can this happen you ask…here is how:

Lenders: Do you realize that when you work with someone you truly trust, they can do more than fill out paperwork for you? They should be abe to  pull your credit report work through it with you and give you suggestions that will help to improve your credit score.  Some will also work with you in ways to get the old items removed that may just need a letter written to the correct person.  They can also lay out a plan in which outstanding items should be paid to increase your score at a faster rate.

Agents: Most agents in todays market will not begin to show you homes until you have a qualification letter from your lender.  If you hear this from an agent, don’t get upset with them; they are doing this for your best interests even though you may not understand it.  They are protecting you from being your own worst enemy by thinking you qualify for more than you do. You don’t want to start to look at homes in the higher price range only to find out you aren’t qualified for that dollar amount, but a lesser amount.  Tradition shows that in most cases you will not be as happy with the homes in the lower range and get discouraged when looking at these homes.  So trust the agent you decide to work with.  Most do have your best interest at heart when they are working with you.

YOU: Can you believe it…YOU play the most important role in this whole transaction! From the moment you feel THE SPIRITS TO MOVE is when your job becomes the most important one.  Once you start talking to people you may work with, treat it as an interview for the person.  You will be telling them some of the most confidential things in your personal life, spending LOTS of time with some and spending tons of time on the phone, in homes and tring to reach the same goal.  Once you have been approved for how much you can afford, there are only 3 people that need to know that amount; YOU, the lender & your agent.  You do not want everyone to know what you have been approved for as this is your secrect card when it comes to negotating the home you want.  When you do find the home you love, NEVER put the qualification amount on the letter you will send to the other agent…KEEP THIS INFORMATION CONFIDENTIAL.  Remember, the lender & agent are working for YOU!

Keep your dreams with in reach by keeping your credit report in check, your spending under control & your goals within reach.  THE SPIRITS TO MOVE can be within your reach!

It’s snowing what about…

As Minnesotans we are used to some calling us tundra people, some call us crazy and some just say “I never want to go there again from November to March”.  Why would people say such a harsh thing about a place so many from our country call the people there as MINNESOTA NICE?

Here is why…SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW! Which also comes with below zero wind chills, icy slick roads and days that can be as gray as a canvas painting.  For those that have grown up & enjoy these words it also makes us remember that there are lots of things to remember during the time when the state of Minnesota can receive on average 36-70″ of snow in a single season.

Here are a few tips to remember:

1.)  SIDEWALK SHOVELING is not an option but the LAW.  Every property owner that has a public sidewalk on their property has 24 hours

to get that snow removed from the pathway.

2.) DUMPING SNOW is against the LAW onto public roads, streets or sidewalks.  This applies to Government agencies & hired help as well.

3.) ICE MELTING products come in various containers, degrees to which they work and animal friendly styles.  Be sure to ready the

directions closely.  Some are not for use on specific concretes, decks or other surfaces.

4.) MAILBOX areas should be cleaned out to assure your postal delivery person easy access to getting your mail to you in a timely manner.

These are just some questions that each and every winter come to mind.  For more information on local and state laws, check with your local authorities.

Also, remember it is always better to give than to receive.  During a heavy snow, help out your elder neighbors to remove the snow from the walkways & driveways.  For those with snow blowers remember those that don’t have one.  It will not only put a smile on your face but theirs for your generosity and kindness, these are THE SPIRITS TO MOVE and how they work.
